General Description

Today we got a special treat from Baskin Robbins, or rather 31 as it's more commonly called in Japan! Like many big, national food franchises, Baskin Robbins Japan has some unique flavours (and lacks some of the North American ones - I miss you pink bubblegum).

One really cool thing about Baskin Robbins Japan is that it often has month long collaborations, usually including a flavour inspired by the collaborating work and special cup designs. This time, to drum up excitement for the new movie, there is a Mario Galaxy collaboration from April 1st the May 7th. You can see everything the collaboration includes here. Rosalina (or Rosetta in Japan) is one of my favourite Mario characters and the Luma charm is just too cute, so I had to get her special cup! The special cups are served with double scoop orders regardless of flavour, but of course I had to try out the collaboration one!

It's Cotton Fruit Galaxy! It's really pretty, even if the candy Power Stars aren't as artistically placed like in the advertisement. The dark blue cotton candy ice cream represents the vast outer space, the light blue lychee sorbet represents the sky, and the white pear sorbet ribbon represents the clouds and sparkling Milky Way. Together they make the grand Milky Way of Mario Galaxy, with a flavour combination that is like exploring the great unknown.

Well, it certainly sounds exciting, so without further ado, let's jump in!

Taste

The cotton candy is your sweet, standard cotton candy flavour. Both the lychee and pear are sweet and accurate. The lychee has its signature sourness that is subtle enough that you can taste it but not feel it. The pear is harder to pick out because it's so small. The stars are like white chocolate. They're not that sweet nor do they stand out. They add more texture than flavour.

Texture

The ice cream and sorbet are both very smooth. The ice cream is creamy but the sorbet keeps it light overall. The stars are solid but not hard.

Smell

It doesn't have a strong smell.

Overall

Overall it's pretty good. The sorbet doesn't make it as heavy as just ice cream. It's not as sweet or heavy as I was expecting. I personally like ice cream more than sorbet, so I would have preferred if all of it was ice cream.

The flavour combination works well. The tropical fruit keep it tasting like a light dessert. It's like eating a lychee candy, where the sweet flavour is that of cotton candy.

It's enjoyable and fun but I wouldn't say it's a must try flavour. I do really like the aesthetic and cherish my new cup and charm though!

Would I try again?

I'm glad I tried it, but I don't think I would particularly order it again, especially when there are so many other flavours to try.
