[Imuraya] Taiyaki Ice (ice cream taiyaki)

(Taiyaki Aisu | Ice Cream Taiyaki)

General Description

Perhaps I should have waited until summer to review this, but it's getting hot out and I'm craving ice cream. It's Taiyaki Ice! Maybe I should have also waited until I've reviewed actual taiyaki first. However, this treat is not really taiyaki, but rather mimicking its concept. Taiyaki isn't usually filled with ice cream after all!

It's time to see what this fun little fishie has in store for us. Let's jump in!

Taste

The shell is like a decent wafer ice cream cone. I'm usually skeptical of wafer cones because most of them taste like cardboard, but this one is not bad. It has a bit of sweet wafer taste to it.

You can taste the sweet vanilla in the ice cream. The bits of chocolate tastes like the typical chocolate you find paired with ice cream cones. As you can see, there are only a few pieces, so you don't always get some with each bite. The anko is sweet. I recommend eating the taiyaki with the anko side faced down so you get more of the flavour.

Texture

The shell is soft and not too dry. It won't stick to your mouth. The ice cream isn't hard and easy to eat. The anko is like a thick paste.

Smell

There is a faint sweet wafer smell when you hold it close.

Overall

This is a fun little treat. I recommend letting it sit for just a bit before you eat it so you aren't biting straight into cold ice cream. The taiyaki shell also makes it easy to eat. The ice cream doesn't escape and, unlike say ice cream sandwiches, the shell doesn't stick to your fingers. I do wish there were more anko and especially more chocolate.

Would I try again?

Yeah! It's probably something I'd share with visiting friends too.
