Kirby Apple Jelly Drink

(Kaabi no Ringo Zerii Dorinku - Kirby Apple Jelly Drink)

General Description

Happy Kirby Air Riders to all that celebrate! ...Huh, I'm a bit late? Well, the sequel took 22 years to come out, so it's in the spirit of things.

Today we are trying out a special collab drink between Nintendo and Family Mart to celebrate the (at the time upcoming) release of Kirby Air Riders. This kind of collaboration is very common. If a popular game series or anime is coming out with a new entry/season, keep an eye out for collab items or campaigns at convenience stores! This campaign included foods and snacks, special wrapping for Family Mart's regular hot foods, and even merchandise!

Unfortunately, the campaign recently ended. Even when I bought today's drink, the merch was already out of stock. Gotta be faster! However, we still get to try something special - an apple jelly drink! I think this is the first jelly drink we've reviewed. It might sound odd, but they are very popular and common drinks in Japan. This one comes with a topping, stored in the "bubbly fluff base" packet. As Waddle Dee cutely demonstrates on the cup, all you need to do is pour the powder from the packet on top, give it a good stir, and voila!

Now that it's ready, let jump in!

Taste

The whip is sooooo sour, in a candy sour way, not like a sour fruit. It has a slight apple flavour, but that might be from mixing it with the drink.
The jelly drink itself has a light sweet apple flavour, similar to an apple candy or gum. It's fun to get a mix of the whip with the jelly drink and have a tasty balance of both flavours.

Texture

The whip is very airy and thin. While not grainy when mixed well, you can feel that it came from an instant powder mix. The jelly chunks are very small and soft. It's very easy to drink while still having jelly-like texture.

Smell

There's a sweet apple candy smell.

Overall

It's surprisingly pretty filling. Although it has a fun taste, the sour flavour stops it from being a thirst quenching drink to me. And while it's not overly sweet, I do have that "ooh I ate a lot of candy" feeling in my stomach after drinking it. All that being said, I quite like this drink. The sour whip makes it unique and the jelly is nice too. It's priced around the same amount as smoothie drinks at convenience stores, plus it comes with a cute cup, so it's not unreasonable.

Would I try again?

I wouldn't have it regularly, but as a nice treat...if it were still available. Maybe next time!
