[Kirin] Mottainai (Fuji Apple Flavour Black Tea)

(Gogo no Koucha Mottainai Fuji Ringo Teii | Afternoon Tea Mottainai Fuji Apple Tea)

General Description

Winter is very much here, but at least it comes with a new wave of Mottainai! And today's flavour is Fuji apple!

Hm? I've already said this? Well, that was for Kirin's Mottainai chuhai. This time, we are looking at their Mottainai tea! I wasn't aware that they also did a Mottainai tea series until I checked their site for information for our last review. But it makes sense; Kirin has a big black tea series, called 午後の紅茶 ("afternoon tea"), and these fruits are too good to waste!

In contrast to the chuhai's sweet and tart balance, the tea boasts its rich aroma and sweetness, as well as its fresh taste. If you'd like to know more about Kirin's Mottainai project, you can check out the project's webpage or our first review of the series.

I liked the chuhai, so how will this fare? Let's jump in and find out!

Taste

It's pretty sweet. Not as sweet as juice but sweeter than most teas and definitely more than I was expecting. It uses grape sugar, so the sweetness tastes very natural, at least for me. The black tea flavour is very subtle. You might not pick up on it if you don't know that this is a tea. It's almost like an aftertaste. Overall, the drink tastes like actual apple with a sweet, light tart flavour. I'm surprised that the drink only uses 0.1% fruit juice because of how strong and accurate it tastes.

Texture

It's very "thin" and clear like water.

Smell

It has a very sweet natural apple smell, not like an apple flavour candy.

Overall

I'll be honest, I'm not a tea person, so I was bracing myself for something that would be interesting but not my cup of tea. However, it might be my go-to tea from now on! Since I like strong, sweet drinks, teas often taste very weak to me, but this has no such issue. It very much feels like juice with some tea flavour rather than the other way around, so if you don't like sweet teas, you might not be a fan of this.

I'll have to check out the next tea when it comes out!

Would I try again?

To my surprise, yes!
