[Bourbon] Marron Blanc

(Maron Buran | Marron Blanc)

General Description

Today we have another chestnut flavoured sweet! It says "Marron Blanc" which I'm assuming is just Mont Blanc? I couldn't find anything about it from a quick search. Since this one is a mini cake dessert, I think the flavour will be stronger than the marshmallow cake I tried before.

This is the first time we've looked at a Bourbon snack. I'm quite a fan of their sweets. Their chocolate is always great and they have a lot of cake-like desserts. I really wanted to try this snack when I saw it at the store. Expect to see Bourbon a lot in the future!

The box doesn't label itself as a limited time snack, so it might be available all year round. However, I've only seen it at the store in the fall.

[Cultural Note] Seasonal Flavours

Perhaps because Japan is an island country that shares no borders with other countries, the foods and flavours that are “in” change with the seasons.
While you can find some seasonal flavours all year round at certain stores, you’ll see cafés and restaurants advertising specialty drinks and desserts and stores selling unique snacks depending on the time of year.

Some notable seasonal flavours are:

  • Strawberries (mid/late winter)
  • Cherry Blossom (early spring)
  • Maccha (spring)
  • Mint (early summer)
  • Pineapple, Lychee, Lemon, Watermelon (summer)
  • Sweet potato (fall) Chestnut (fall)

Taste

The chocolate on top is a nice creamy milk chocolate. The chestnut flavour mixes well with chocolate. Checking the box again, it has a liiiiiitle bit of alcohol (probably liquor). I think it's in the chocolate. Either way, it tastes great.
The cream is, well, pretty creamy. It has a light, sweet chestnut taste. It's not as strong as the chocolate. The cake is a bit sweet but doesn't have a strong taste, which is fine because the chocolate and cream are sweet and flavourful enough.
It all comes together beautifully.

Texture

The cake is so soft and fluffy. Each bite is so light. The chocolate on top is solid but also soft, so it adds a nice touch to the texture. The cream is light and has a buttery smoothness. I'm not usually a fan of this kind of texture, but the cake balances it out for me.

Smell

There isn't a strong smell.

Overall

Bourbon sweets have yet to let me down. It tastes amazing. It's a perfect snack to go with a hot or sweet drink. It has that kind of "adult" flavour. It's light, fluffy, and not too sweet.

Would I try again?

Yes, but as a special treat. I can picture myself having one with a hot chocolate on a cool morning. It's pretty small and light, so it's quality over quantity. I definitely think it's worth it though.
The box does warn that since it has a bit of alcohol (1.3%), use your own discretion when you eat it or share with others.
